The Moving Out | Η Μετακόμιση

Lambda colour prints, each 180×150 cm

January – June 2009

The photographic series ‚The Moving Out’ seem to document the personal belongings of an elderly woman, carelessly taken out of their original places.  The third picture of the series, called ‘The Bed’ suspects the viewer that this is not a simple documentation but a displeasing ritual that many people experience with elderly members of the families after their death.

The questions evoked remain purposefully unanswered: What to do with all these belongings, regarded as extremely precious by their previous owner, most of them being useless for their heirs? Throw them away, keep them, use them, frame them, burn them? Why the role of these items in the process of separation, mourning and eventually memory or forgetting of the deceased is so ambiguous?
