Photographic slides Installation – 4 portraits
Front Space, Barnes Building, Glasgow School of Art, Glasgow, Scotland
I used four photographic slides in the creation of this piece. Two of them, depicting a younger couple, were found at my family home in Thessaloniki, Greece. The pictures were taken in December 1982 on a train in Switzerland. The other two slides, featuring an older couple were photographed by myself on a train in Thessaloniki in December 2008. The portraits in the slides are my parents. I used four slide projectors placed on a plinth. The projections were arranged so that the faces mirror each other; the young woman’s posture mirrors that of the older woman. The same applies to the man. This arrangement also causes the train seats to align, appearing as if the four of them are sitting together.
In this work I am trying to examine relationships between people, the relationship to the self and specifically, the notion of time and timelessness. I am suggesting the possibility of underlying dialogues and stories. The viewer can choose to identify with the individuals depicted, without needing to know anything about them.
