Mixed Media Sculpture requiring the audience’s participation

Universität der Künste Berlin, Germany

Take a Piece of Me is a sculpture created for a party held at the Universität der Künste, Berlin in March 2007. I used a table, three plates, napkins and an assortment of confections; Scottish shortbreads, Greek baklava and German Apfelstrudeln. The table was installed in the exhibition space and was brightly lit from above. The three confections were placed on the plates which were each dressed with a large napkin. A text, translated into three languages (English, Greek and German), was printed on the napkins. On smaller napkins, which stood in front of the plates, the same text was also printed but in fragments. The text was a synthesis of my personal notes and thoughts from my stay in Berlin in 2007. Towards the end of the party, some of the napkins had become mixed with each other, some of them were discarded and some were taken away by members of the audience.
This project was an attempt to deal with issues of authenticity and identity that arise when presenting and expressing oneself in a foreign land.
