The disquiet connoted through the continuous movement of the car represents the constant feeling of movement and anxiety of people who live away from what they consider their ‘home’. The emotional tension evoked by the separation from my mother, the reality that we live away from each other and the fact that our relationship is growing and evolving, simultaneously to our physical ageing, are some of the ideas which led me to the use of car journeys as a narrative device.
The videos show two car journeys, which happen in completely different places, the driver however is the same in both, the mother (the co-driver makes it clear by naming her ‘Mama’). On first entering the space, the viewer is presented with the video ‘Home’ in a white room and on proceeding further enters a black room in which the video ‘Strange’ is displayed. The ‘journey’ that the visitor embarks on into the space is a critical part of the concept of the work.
